Louisville Marine Enshrined Memorial Day 2013 Patriots Peace Memorial

Patriots Peace Memorial Enshrinement 2013

Louisville, Kentucky; May 27, 2013:  Each year on Memorial Day, military personnel with Kentucly connections, who have died in the line of duty but not as a result of hostile enemy actions, are remembered during ceremonies at the Patriots Peace Memorial (PPM), located on the banks of the Ohio River.   Memorialized this year was Sgt Cory A. Adkins, USMC of Louisville, Kentucky. In witness to the inherent danger of military service, 440 members of all our armed forces have been enshrined at the PPM since its dedication on November 11, 2002. Sgt Adkins, a veteran of the Global War on Terror, with two (2) deployments to Iraq (2003) (2005), joined the Marine Corps in 2002 at Louisville, Kentucky. From a very young age, Sgt Adkins was involved in the Crusade for Children, a charitable cause adopted by Louisville area fire departments. At age 16, Sgt Adkins became an Explorer Scout with the Jefferson County Fire Department. He was a graduate of Seneca High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Training Corps (MCJROTC) and a cadet with the West Buechel Police Department. During June 2007, Sgt Adkins took leave from the Marine Corps to work on the Crusade for Children with the Camp Taylor Fire Department. At the time of his tragic death from a motor vehicle accident, Sgt Adkins was serving with the Marine Corps School of Infantry (East Division) at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Representing the Marine Corps at the enshrinement ceremony was Sgt Nick Taylor, USMC, Inspector and Instructor Staff, Company E, 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Fort Knox, Kentucky (Photograph), who presented a glass plate inscribed with Sgt Adkins' name and branch of service, to his father, Sgt Scott Adkins, Okolona Fire Department. This glass plate will be installed within the PPM in place of a concrete block which will be removed, thus enabling light to radiate from within the memorial during the hours of darkness.  Other Marines participating in this moving ceremony were Sgt Ryan McNeal, USMC, Military Entrance Processing Station, Louisville, Kentucky (USMC Flagbearer); LtCol Charles A. McLaurine (Chairman, PPM Committee); Joseph Dodson (Bagpiper), Alison Porter (Bugler), and Color Guard and Rifle Volley Squad, Marine Corps League Kentuckiana Detachment #729. (Photograph courtesy of Tammy Wells, Majestic Eagle Productions, LLC, Louisville, Kentucky)
